In early 2026, U.S. immigration enforcement had intensified significantly under a second Trump administration, focusing on high-intensity interior raids, increased worksite enforcement, and mass deportation strategies. ICE is expanding detention capacity to over 100,000 beds, with increased activity in communities and at workplaces, particularly in construction. Data published by ICE in February 2026 shows a 40 percent increase in arrests nationwide in the first month alone compared to January 2025.
The ICE expansion comes alongside announcements of new immigration policies intended to streamline removal proceedings and reduce backlogs. However, legal experts warn these changes could exacerbate vulnerabilities for many immigrants, especially in regions like North Carolina and Florida, where community ties are strong, but resources are limited.
The current administration is preparing for a more aggressive immigration crackdown in 2026 with billions in new funding, including by raiding more workplaces — even as backlash builds ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
The current Administration surged immigration agents into major U.S. cities, where they swept through neighbourhoods and clashed with residents. While federal agents this year conducted some high-profile raids on businesses, they largely avoided raiding farms, factories, and other businesses that are economically important but known to employ immigrants without legal status. ICE is transitioning away from private contractors to manage its own facilities, with plans to consolidate into around 34 large facilities nationwide. Massive warehouses are being purchased, including sites in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Arizona, and near El Paso, Texas, designed to hold 5,000–10,000 individuals each.
